The first version of the band came out in June 2017, delivered in January 2018, and now the Dreem band 2, which I tested, has come out in May 2019. The two main drawbacks were that it was too heavy (500g, compared to 100g today) and that it didn’t help with falling asleep. It launched the first BETA version of its product in October 2016 and offered it to 500 users out of 7000 applicants. The company was started in 2010, built on scientific research showing that noise can stimulate deep sleep. They also have built in 2 proper nap rooms with full-size beds, which can be used as long as needed. There is also a team of 10 in New York for the American market, and the manufacturing comes out of Taiwan. It houses a team of 70 employees, divided between hardware engineers (with their own prototyping lab), sleep scientists, software engineers, the marketing team, and support. On the 29th of March, I went to Dreem’s headquarters in Paris on boulevard Hausmann in a very fancy startup office. Also, it was not a final version which can make some of the results obtained slightly different. I haven’t tested that feature as I don’t have any sleep problems.ĭisclaimer: The Dreem band was given to me for free so I didn’t pay the catalogue price of 399€, therefore my take on price/value are less objective. The main feature of Dreem is the coaching programs based on cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps chronic insomniacs to fix their sleep problems in 6 to 8 weeks.I got used to wearing it pretty rapidly but it still disturbs me slightly. The biggest drawbacks are the comfort when wearing it and the aesthetic factor. The analysis of the data is qualitative, but I would have appreciated more options. The deep sleep stimulation seems to be working a bit but not significant(10% increase). The tracking is very precise, the most precise of any sleep tracker I’ve used so far, and could still be further improved. The device and the user experience is really nice, super polished and close to the level of a Bose QC35.Here is a summary of my takeaways before going into the details: I’ve tested it for over one month now and I’m pleased, but not completely convinced. As I don’t have any sleep problems, my test is different of what it could be for an insomniac, the target audience of this band. I was interested in testing the band to get qualitative data and further improve my sleep. Sleep is one of my top priorities and I’ve already optimized it a lot (more in the chapter on sleep in my life optimization post). It’s great to see technology and investors trying to fix sleep. I knew the founder, Hugo, from the early days of the company and have been impressed by how the product has been developed as well as how much money they were able to raise ($57M). The French startup Dreem offered me the chance to be the first to test its new band before it was released. That’s me at 8 am waking up with the new Dreem 2 band (not photoshopped □). Last update: March 2020, added thoughts after 1 year of use at the end of the article.
